The IWS AutoDrain Control Unit (brain bucket) is the heart of the IWS Flood and Drain system. It features a timer that allows the grower to control the number of flood cycles within their Flood and Drain system. Additionally, the Pro version allows control over the length of flood.
IWS AutoDrain System / IWS Flood & Drain:
Growing with soil/coir, starves roots in pots of oxygen after every watering cycle as they sit in the run-off in saucers. AutoDrain removes run-off fast which prevents rot, increases nutrient uptake and growth and reduces the risk of crop-destroying issues like Pythium. The AutoDrain pot system includes a control pot which collects, holds, then pumps away the run-off to a drain or bucket for waste or recirculation.
While both are IWS hydroponic systems, the “IWS Flood and Drain” system refers to a standard flood and drain system where the nutrient solution completely fills the pots at set intervals, while the “IWS Auto Drain” system specifically focuses on automatically draining excess runoff from the pots back to the reservoir, essentially preventing plants from sitting in standing water; so, they are not exactly the same, but the Auto Drain system is often used in conjunction with a standard Flood and Drain setup to optimise nutrient management.
-
Function:
A basic Flood and Drain system simply floods the pots with nutrient solution and then drains them back to the reservoir, while an Auto Drain system actively collects and removes excess runoff from the pots.
-
Components:A Flood and Drain system primarily consists of pots, a reservoir, and a control unit to manage the flooding schedule. An Auto Drain system additionally includes special trays or drainage channels designed to capture runoff and direct it to a drain or collection point.
