Rooting gels/powders - Product Information - Paul Fowler
SECTION 5 - PRODUCT INFORMATION
ROOTING GELS/POWDERS
Rooting agents come in the form of a thick liquid gel or a powder and are important in giving your cutting a head start with the rooting process. All parts of the plant have the necessary hormones and auxins required to produce roots, but it takes time for them to get to the cut end. Rooting gels/powders have synthetic hormones which perform a similar role in encouraging the root cells to develop initially.

Before the roots can grow a callous needs to form around the cut stem. Rooting gels and some powders help seal the cut end and encourage the callous formation.

Although more expensive rooting gels have the advantage in that they stick to the cut end and remain in contact for longer. Some also have anti-microbial agents (or fungicides) to help avoid infection. The active ingredient in powders can be as low as 1% and will oxidise within months, making it inactive.

Be careful not to use too much gel or powder as once the callous is formed (and the roots are growing) further callous growth can happen due to the amount of auxins around the roots. This will slow the root growth down.
