| OTHER ROOTING MEDIUMS | ||
| Rockwool is the ideal rooting medium for hydroponic systems, but for some plants and/or growing methods other mediums are more suitable. For hydroponic systems (passive or active) perlite or vermiculite are usually used. Like Rockwool they both give a good water to air ratio and are sterile. Pcrlite and vermiculite are similar, and are produced by heating them until they burst open (like pop-corn kernels) to give a sponge like texture. The main difference between them is that vermiculite has a cation exchange capacity’ which means it can ‘hold’ on to nutrients etc whereas perlite does not and contains no mineral elements. Both are available in different grades and can be purchased in various size bags/sacks. For some specialist (and non softwood) plants and/or growing methods, other mediums should be used but these are not recommended as general hydroponic rooting mediums. Please refer to a specialist publication on the plant you wish to propagate. Other rooting mediums include compressed peat (jiffy blocks), sand, expanded clay pebbles, coconut fibre, oasis blocks, peat mix, pumice, sand, scoria, composted bark. | ||
