Some common problems - Hardening off - Paul Fowler
SECTION 3 - HARDENING OFF
SOME COMMON PROBLEMS
If the seedling/cutting is stressed it will use time and energy dealing with the problem instead of putting down and growing roots. This can restrict its growth or even cause it to die. The secret to propagation is to avoid causing stress to the plant by balancing the environmental factors - to make its life stress free!

If, after four days, the seedling/cutting is still wilting then tease open the rooting medium and check if there is any root growth. If there is none at all, then check the following:

IS THE ROCKWOOL/ROOTING MEDIUM TOO WET?
The Rockwool/rooting medium should not be wet, oniy moist. It is important that air can reach the roots and that there is drainage underneath.

IS THE ROCKWOOL/ROOTING MEDIUM TOO DRY?
The Rockwool must hold enough water between feedings to supply the seedling/cutting with nutrients.
Remember that at this stage they are minimal, so only give it enough to last until the next feeding.

IS THE HUMIDITY CORRECT?
The humidity should be high, at around 80% -90%. Check both the night and day levels. Usually at this humidity a little condensation should form on the inside of the propagator.

IS THE TEMPERATURE CORRECT?
For root cell initiation it is important that the temperature is around 24°C, both at day and night. Most indoor grow-rooms should create this temperature within a propagator but a heated propagator may solve any problems caused by the cold.

IS THE LIGHTING CORRECT?
At this stage only low levels of lighting are required. Use fluorescent lighting or if you are using more powerful lights either put the propagator in a shaded area or place a white towel over the top.

HAS AN EMBOLISM OCCURRED?
When taking cuttings you must make sure that the cut end is exposed to the air for as little time as possible.

DO YOU HAVE A PLANT DISEASE?
If the plant been effected by a disease it will show signs of ‘damping off
