Sexing seeds/plants - Seeds - Paul Fowler
SECTION 1 - SEEDS
SEXING SEEDS/PLANTS
When growing certain plants (hops for example) knowing the sex is important, as only the female plants will be productive. The male or hermaphrodite (with characteristics of both sexes) plants will need to be isolated or destroyed.

Although the sex of some plants can be determined at an early stage, most will remain indistinguishable until the pre-fruit/flowering period, so you will need to allow them to develop to this stage.

The process of sexing plants requires a basic understanding of how the two different lighting periods used in indoor gardening effect the different stages of growth.

VEGETATIVE GROWTH (18 hours on/6 hours off).
Whilst the lighting period is on the vegetative growth setting a plant will continue to grow.

PRE-FRUIT/FLOWERING (12 hours on/12 hours off).
When the lighting is reduced the plant will quickly realise and go into a period of 2/3 weeks of concentrated root and shoot growth whilst initially forming buds. It is at this stage that the sex can be identified.

FRUIT/FLOWERING (12 hours on/12 hours off).
After the pre-fruit/flowering stage, the plant will then slow or stop the production of roots and shoots and switch all of its energies into producing the fruit/flowers.
