Germiniating seeds - Seeds - Paul Fowler
SECTION 1 - SEEDS
GERMINATING SEEDS
It is preferable to germinate the seeds before planting rather than putting them straight into the rooting medium.

The absorption of water swells the embryo, which can then crack open the shell. Germination also softens the hard outer shell of the seed, making it easier for the root to push through.

Seeds generally only have a water content of around 20% and will not activate until this is above 80%. Itis this absorption of water that swells the embryo forcing it to crack open the shell.

In addition, as not all seeds will germinate, this avoids wastage of materials, as only healthy, active seeds are planted on.

  • Cover a small plate or bowl with a layer of paper towel or cheesecloth type material.

  • Place the seeds on the plate, cover with another layer of paper towel/material and then moisten. Do not soak the seeds — any excess water should be drained off.

  • Cover the plate with Clingfilm/plastic wrap and pierce a few holes in the top. This will help create a warm and moist environment.

  • Place in a warm, dark environment. The ideal temperature for germination is 18°C — 28°C. Root cell initiation is encouraged if heat is supplied from underneath.

  • Water daily, to ensure seeds do not dry out. As before, they should be kept moist only — any excess should be drained off.

germinating seedsThe tap root should appear within seven days.
germinating seedsAt this stage the seed should be planted into the rooting medium, it should be planted as deep as the length of the root (usually around 5 mm).
germinating seedsTransfer the seed in the rooting medium into a propagator to harden-off (develop a root system).
