Another way of adding extra oxygen into the nutrient solution is by using an air diffuser. They are usually made from high grade clay which has been fired at high temperatures to produce a very porous ceramic.

The diffuser is placed into the nutrient solution so that it is submerged. Air is then pumped into the centre using an air pump, which filters through the diffuser producing lots of small bubbles.
